Numerous reports in the literature indicate that the quality of pain management in the emergency department (ED) is disturbingly poor (1-4). The following causes have been put forward: failure to acknowledge pain, failure to assess initial pain, lack of pain management guidelines in the ED, failure to document pain and to assess treatment adequacy and shortcomings in meeting the patient's expectations of pain relief.
