Numerous studies have shown that gaining employment has a positive impact on drug treatment outcome (Kidorf, Stitzer & Brooner 1994; McLellan et al. 1993; Hermalin et al. 1990; McLellan 1983; Szapocznik & Ladner 1977). Employment has been shown to reduce drug use (Welsh 2002) which leads to reductions in crime (Kinlock, Grady & Thomas 2003; Freeman 1995) and HIV risk behaviors (DeLeon et al. 2000; Sees et al. 2000; Moss et al. 1994) and results in improvements in overall level of client functioning. Despite these findings, employment interventions are rarely implemented in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) (Etheridge et al. 1995). Typically, MMT programs refer clients to outside agencies since there is no reimbursement for providing employment services. In addition, the methadone treatment process presents several barriers that often interfere with obtaining and maintaining employment, such as daily dosing regimens and inflexible treatment schedules (French et al. 1992).
